Bula Fiji!
|
After a frantic few weeks fitting our lives into a couple of suitcases, what we really needed is a holiday. And seeing as the cheapest flights we could find across the pacific happened to go via Fiji, it seemed too good an opportunity to miss spending a couple of days unwinding enroute to the states.
It turns out we’re just a couple of degrees of separation from someone who apparently runs the best little laid-back resort in Fiji, too, so before we knew it, we found ourselves waking from a late night flight and a bumpy busride around the island into the bright South Pacific morning light and picture postcard beachfront of Fiji BeachHouse. While it’s kind of a low-key backpacker style resort, it’s well setup for families – our room had plenty of space for us all and funky outdoor bathroom, all kind of rustic, with great style and character. There were more activities on offer than could possibly be squeezed into our couple of days, and just lazing around on the swings and hammocks and a snorkel off the beach at high tide was really action enough – although Fiona did manage to squeeze in a daily Bula massage. The reef flats extend for a couple hundred meters from the shore at low tide and are good snorkelling at high tide, and we borrowed some kayaks to paddle out together for a snorkel. Angus is a good snorkeller now, and after a bit of practise in the pool, Evie took to it like a fish to water – and even Digby joined in, just kind of bobbing around out on the reef happy enough in goggles and a life jacket. |
